5. Osteopathy

The manual treatment is based on the following understanding of the disease: There is constant movement in the organism (heart beats, blood and lymph circulate, signals buzz through the nerves through the body, digesting stomach and intestines). If this flow of movement is hindered somewhere (e.g. due to injuries, inflammation), pain and illness will result. The aim of osteopathy: to detect movement blockages and eliminate them by stimulating the self-healing powers.

Use: back, spine, headache and joint pain

6. Vibroextension

The stretching treatment (gentle stretching) with mechanical vibration massage of the spinal muscles causes the entire postural and support muscles to be loosened and jammed nerve cords to loosen more easily. The simultaneous application of hot air intensifies the effect.

Use: Painful spinal column syndromes, strong tension, jammed nerves

7. Aquatherapy

The applications in the water affect the entire nervous system, the musculoskeletal system and the organs. Although the water resistance is 900 times higher than in the air, targeted exercises by removing gravity are joint-relieving, but highly efficient.

Use: pain after accidents, worn out joints (arthrosis), muscle building after operations

8. Massage, lymphatic drainage

The pain-relieving manual therapies include both the classic therapeutic massage, in which certain hand movements stimulate (pressure or pull) on muscles, subcutaneous tissue, joints and bursa, as well as the cervical spine traction massage – a combination of massage, manual extension and isometric exercises. Manual lymph drainage is based on increasing the peristalsis (note: movement of hollow organs) of the lymph vessels using special grip techniques, which leads to decongestion and reduction of edema.

Use: Injuries with swelling

9. Cold therapy

Cold therapy uses the fact that blood vessels contract when exposed to cold stimuli, the muscles tense and the leakage of fluid from blood and lymph vessels is reduced. The falling body temperature inhibits the activity of the inflammatory mediators. Since the reflexes of the nervous system are generally reduced when it is cold, the sensation of pain under the skin, for example in the joints and muscles, also decreases. Cold gas therapy, a special form, uses dry cold from evaporating nitrogen.

Use: spinal and joint diseases, pain relief, tendon sheath and bursitis, rheumatism

Today the Beer Guide 2017 is presented. We take this highlight as an opportunity to refresh your knowledge of hops and malt: open the can or bottle, drink, done. Very few beer drinkers approach the matter like this. For many, enjoying beer is a little science. The right temperature, the perfect glass and a wonderful crown are simply part of it. Knowing one or the other extra detail from the world of beer doesn’t hurt either, of course.

Let go. Give your digestion a break! A purification day boosts your metabolism and gives you new energy. We’ll give you the best recipes and know what to look out for.

Detox is the new magic word in the wellness industry. We have

Lifestyle medic Dr. Christian Matthai

asked what makes the difference between the well-known detoxification method and its newly invented counterpart. The author of the

Book “The Detox Cookbook” (Kneipp Verlag)

* also reveals what really matters on a detox day. We also deliver the right recipes.

All things new

Detoxing has absolutely nothing to do with milk and roll cures, days of drinking juice or soup spoons, as Matthai confirms: “

Fast

Firstly, it is always limited to one to three weeks and secondly it is understood as a radical cure. My definition of detox is more of a lifestyle that can be practiced daily or for a limited time, depending on your mood. It starts with wondering what possibilities you have to detox every day. “

Which is absolutely taboo

The expert has established the following principles for this:

sugar

,

alcohol

, Ready meals, junk food, baked, fried and breaded dishes are just as taboo as

Smoke

. Instead, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and plenty of fluids, especially water and tea, are the order of the day. It is also important to be sufficient

sleep

pay attention and do at least four hours of sport per week (that means at least half an hour a day!). And last but not least: think positively!

Exceptions allowed

He himself lives strictly according to these principles and allows himself only one weakness: “I need a piece of dark chocolate every now and then!”. But with all the rules, enjoyment must not be neglected, so such exceptions are allowed from time to time. And animal fats and meat consumption can easily be reduced with recipes such as the tofu salad with plums.

Energy booster

You can get more energy with lots of local fruit and vegetables. Mainly apples, cranberries, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, grapes, garlic, wild garlic, cucumbers, artichokes, onions, beets, cabbage, cabbage sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, peppers, celery, carrots, tomatoes, asparagus and sprouts it has a detoxifying effect on the liver and kidneys. Herbs such as coriander, oregano, rosemary, parsley, mint, yarrow, chamomile, dandelion, lovage, nettle, lavender and cress make the dishes even more tasty.

That feels good

But also some ingredients from the Asian cuisine should not be missing from the detox menu, as Matthai says: “I recommend the use of lemongrass, cinnamon, curry and ginger – not instead of local products, of course, but in addition to them.” Goji berries, açaí berries and mangosteen are also indispensable for him. The reason for this are the valuable secondary plant substances such as Lycium barbarum polysaccharides in goji berries (have an antioxidant effect, lower blood pressure), the polyphenols in açaí berries (have an antioxidant effect) and alpha mangosteen in mangosteen (anti-inflammatory). All ingredients that are said to have a great effect in countless studies.

The good is so close

In order to get these healthy helpers, however, you have to make a little effort, as Matthai explains: “Unfortunately, you can only get açaíberries as juices in health food stores, and mangosteen can sometimes be bought in some markets such as the Viennese Naschmarkt. But then one kilo costs around 24 euros. “

This is how the detox day works

For a detox day in between, he advises you to eat snacks and in any case

carbohydrates

to refrain from dinner. “That has hormonal reasons,” says Matthai. After all, the blood sugar level should not be driven up. For him, detoxing also means being active, because: “It doesn’t work without a positive attitude towards life and work on the body,” says the expert.

A dream figure in three weeks

For everyone who wants to do something good for their health as well as their figure, Dr. Matthai put together a three-week nutrition plan. It consists of three meals a day (morning, noon, evening). In order to make a change in diet easier, the expert recommends an adequate supply of unsweetened liquids. Here is the

Obviously, there is no herb against aging and the associated cell changes. However, the cell does not give up without a fight: it uses a protective process – autophagy – to defend itself against degeneration. This can be done by

Fast

to be triggered. Molecular biologists at the University of Graz are investigating whether “Alternate Day Fasting” can increase human life expectancy.

Fasting – what many only with regard to

Weight reduction

According to Frank Madeo from the Institute for Molecular Biosciences at the University of Graz, it could also have health-promoting effects on the organism. “So far, only the so-called caloric restriction, i.e. the reduction in the increase in nutrients, has actually proven to be effective in extending the life span or in age-associated diseases such as

diabetes

, Keeping cardiovascular diseases, neurodegeneration and cancer in check, “explains Madeo. For example, experiments have shown that mice given 30 percent less food would live around 30 percent longer.

Harmful cell components are disposed of

The Graz researcher recognizes the cause of this in a process called autophagy: “This is a kind of self-digestion program through which unused cell components are broken down into individual macromolecules and thus reused for the synthesis of new cell components,” explains the head of the “Aging and Cell Death” working group of the University of Graz. Accordingly, this recycling process is always switched on in the cells when not enough macromolecules are ingested through food, for example through fasting. The special thing about this “self-digestion”: All those harmful cell components that accumulate in old age (e.g. clumped proteins and damaged mitochondria) and thus impair the functioning of the organism are disposed of.

Breaks between meals make sense

From Madeo’s point of view it is therefore clear that breaks between meals make sense, but it is unclear “how big” the breaks should be. “Anything between two meals a day or a meal every other day seems healthy,” Madeo said. In its current research project, Medeo is particularly targeting “Alternate Day Fasting”. “We alternate between fasting one day and eating one day without restriction, which makes the method easily accessible to the human psyche and therefore easier to implement overall than the concept of permanent calorie restriction.”

Further tests planned

Overall, Graz wants to investigate several groups with different eating and fasting behavior (including vegetarians and a group that also consumes wheat germ extracts).
